If you’re a small business owner, or someone who helps them do what they do — serious kudos. It takes tremendous effort to take the risk and get that sort of thing off the ground. If your operation has been around for years, or decades, and you’re the talk of the towneven better! You’ve got some great hustle and you’re doing something very, very, very right.

Deploy Your Strengths & Outsource Your Weaknesses. If you make amazing muffins, or serve off killer omelettes, you probably have your hands full on the marketing front — particularly with engaging on social media. You are where you’re at because you make a great product, or offer real value to your customers. You’ve done it yourself, and with your family of close knit employees. Having the do-it-yourself attitude is a positive thing, and goes hand in hand with operating a small business successfully. The downside is that if you’re doing something that you’re not great at, or doesn’t directly lead to that thing you do that MAKES YOU MONEY… you’re not putting all of your effort into it.

So your nephew Jimmy’s great with social, and he’s handling your account on Facebook, responds to your customer’s reviews on Yelp, and has set up a nice website to display your menu and contact information online (sorry for all the food analogies, maybe I’m hungry).

Great! That’s perfect. Having a dedicated employee to respond to customers and post on social media platforms is exactly what you need. Better yet if they’re family, because you can pay them less which raises your ROI. But are you certain that Jimmy knows what you want to tell your customers? Is Jimmy really capable of translating the energy you have as the owner/operator into distinctive content online?

If you have someone managing the content you’re pushing to your customers, you need to sit down and have a conversation with themLet them know the message you want to tell the world. Make sure your content showcases what you do, and why you do it. Then have them present it in such a way that gets readers engaged in your business. Even in the most competitive atmosphere, you’re still uniquely you. Tell your story, and get people talking.
