Let's Craft Your Elevator Pitch

An elevator pitch is a brief and persuasive speech that introduces your idea or business to potential clients, partners, or investors. It’s a critical skill for any business development professional, and will help generate interest and demand.

To craft a bulletproof elevator pitch, respond to the following questions naturally, with as much detail as possible. I’ll extract what I need, and develop your perfect pitch.

While I need you to respond casually and naturally, please take time to think about your answers to make sure they’re as accurate as possible, highlighting the right business goals you have. The final pitch will only be as good as the ingredients.

Unique Selling Point (USP)

There's no time to be vague. Please clearly define your USP, or what makes what you or your company offers different from the rest of the competition. Remember, your biggest competitor might just be your prospects trying to DIY. Also include any data points, examples (even if they're not yours), or client testimonials that support this claim.

Timing is Everything

Your entire pitch will be developed to be a total of 30 seconds rehearsed. However, the average attention span window for humans is around 8 seconds. So the first 8 seconds should clearly (in plain language) summarize what you do in a single sentence. Explain what you do here in your own words, be as detailed as you normally are. Also include similes or metaphors that use commonly known brands or organizations. eg. "We are the AirBnB of..." "We are the Amazon of ..." "We are the Uber of..." Avoid and/or explain and define any jargon, acronyms commonly used, or trade terms someone outside of your industry might not know.

Anti-Sales

The purpose of a pitch is to generate demand, not land an instant sale. The message needs to be absent of any hard sales language. The goal here is to persuade your audience to take action. Focus on building trust and rapport by showing you care about the NEEDS, CHALLANGES, GOALS, and HOW YOU CAN HELP YOUR PROSPECTS. Use open ended questions that normally come up to highlight those gaps or pain points your ideal clients have that relate to those above needs.

Oration

In addition to keeping your pitch under 30 seconds, we'll need to use words, phrasing, and a cadence that sounds and feels natural to you, and not unfamiliar. Please copy/paste in this form fill (or use voice to text) to give me your current pitch in your own words the exact way you'd pitch someone today. This will help me get an idea to your speech and presentation format that aligns with your personality.

Relevance

Isolate an aspect of your pitch or offering that is easily a good candidate for backing up with an industry citation or data insight. This can often be an ROI calculation or the conclusion of a case study. Or it can be a common pain point all of your prospects have. Make sure the reference or source your citing is recent. eg. if you're talking about social media use, this is where you'd mention something about TikTok user trends, not Myspace

Be Unforgettable

Be exciting and memorable, not dull. This is where we can inject something impressive, humorous, passionate, or emotional that's tied to your personal career; and connect it to your final CTA of the pitch. This could be an anecdote on a past project that was significant, difficult, or where you worked with notable partners or known organizations.

ASK for Action

This is your call to action, and how we will end your elevator pitch. Remember this isn't a sales pitch, it's to captivate interest and generate demand. Imagine you're in an elevator with your IDEAL client, who is the key decision maker, or part of the group of decision makers. Think to yourself, imagine you're giving your pitch and you can see they are VERY excited and eager to put what you're telling them into action. What is the BEST very next thing you want them to do? Be very specific. eg. NOT "here's my card, send me an email" but INSTEAD "Can you speak to your team and get your XYZ Director in touch with me?" A good next step might be scheduling a formal meet and greet with their team.
